Last Saturday, we had a very special day. We went to Houston to a writing conference where Wilson received an award for a state-wide writing competition (Texas is a big state--there were probably a thousand entries or so.) He received 1st place in the Pre-K to 2nd grade category for his prose entitled "Why I Don't Like Ham."
We were soooo proud of him! He was a little nervous to get up in front of that big room full of people, but of course he conquered with flying colors. His teacher entered him into the contest and she was so supportive! It was a very memorable moment for her and for Wilson. Not to mention all the emotion and tears displayed by me--the mother.

After the ceremony, they honored the winners with an ice cream reception. Everyone enjoyed that!
On our journey home we stopped at Incredible Pizza and pigged out. We'd had a long and exciting day and we were hungry. It was pretty uneventful except the token catastrophe: Ace had a MASSIVE blowout and pooed all over his pants. So I had to wash them out in the "Family Bathroom" and he had to go pants-less while we played mini-golf while under the black lights ambiance. So white trash--but totally fun.
Okay, so one more quick story. Wilson received a medal for his achievement and he really wanted to wear it to church the next day. We told him he could show it to his class and then he should store it in Brett's bag so it didn't get lost. Well our friend said he saw Maisy at church wearing a medal around her neck (she must have sneaked it out of Brett's bag.) He asked her what she did to win that medal. This was her reply: "Oh, I won a swimming contest!" He was so impressed and then he asked her if she got first place (because the medal says 1st place.) She replied, "Yes! I swam on my belly and there were lots of other kids and I beat them all!" I just laughed and laughed when he told me this. Where does she come up with this stuff?

I just read "Why I Don't Like Ham" and I'm totally impressed. Norm and I both laughed and laughed. It's an unusual kid who can write something that lets you see his personality. Congratulations to Wilson!
Kasia, this is so funny. I love it when you sit at the computer and read something that makes you laugh out loud. Your little Wilson is an amazing boy to write such an impressive essay! I'm glad to know that he still likes Christmas.
When I was 5, a little girl threw up hot dogs in my hair at my slumber party. I did not eat hot dogs for the next 18 years. Maybe one day Wilson will like ham again! :)
I think Wilson has inherited your ability to write truly funny things. It is very special to be able to capture the humorous. What a grand occasion . . . congratulations, Wilson!
That is awesome! What a great essay. It was funny and very well written. I could picture it all in my head. First place is well deserved.
That is a fantastic bit of writing!
That is great and very impressive! His essay is hilarious. What a neat experience for all of you! Oh and Maisy's medal story made me laugh too...I can so see my 4 year old doing something like that. So many time we have to ask her, "did that really happen" because we're just not sure!
Wow! Wilson is such a great writer!!! Congratulations to both Wilson for his award-winning ham essay and to Maisy for her swimming (LOL!). What talented kids!
Man, it had to be the ham! Seriously, love little writers. Great job Wilson! Love little story tellers too. Great job Maisy.
Way to go Wilson! Great prose. Very entertaining :) Also, good job Maisy...who knew she was such a great swimmer!
I'm so glad he still likes Christmas! Congratulations Will! And, congratultions to Maisy on her swimming competition too ! :)
This is all so funny to us! We always knew Wilson would do great things! This is just the beginning!
And Maisy will be in the Olympics some day... we just know it!
So, I went to school for 4 long years to earn a degree that entitles me to say that Wilson is, without a doubt, a literary genius! I cannot believe he wrote that. Seriously, maybe I'm reading more into it because I'm his auntie and I'm totally bias, but the kid has some serious writing PROPS!!! I could write a thesis on this baby! LOVE YOU GUYS! Tell Maisy congratulations on her swimming trophy! :) And Ace on his fabulous poo! :) - Kress
WOW! That is AMAZING! I read to my kids. I read it to my family. I read it to anyone who was around and I had the computer. They all laughed. Wilson is AMAZING!!! Tell him Dustin doesn't like ham either.
Did you figure out your Page plans yet? I think we're headed up to Utah the middle/end of June and then we'll be back early/middle of July.
Haha! I love the story! Very impressive. And I was totally laughing about Maisy's sneakiness with the medal! I saw her wearing it on Sunday too and was wondering where it came from...
Wilson is hilarious. HILARIOUS. Sad day for ham, but a good belly laugh for the rest of us.
