I started jumping up and down and screaming for Wilson to come quick (Okay, so I had become attached to the pupa too.) It truly was amazing as we watched it break through the cocoon and appear as a monarch butterfly. The whole process really is a small miracle.
It was a very difficult decision, but we decided to let the butterfly go. Wilson said he needed to go find his friends and learn to fly with them.
Tears were shed as we placed him on the grass and said good-bye. Jake then spread his stunning wings for the first time. I think it was his way of saying good-bye to us.

The Circle of Life
It's A MIRACLE! Our pupa turned into a BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLY! Last Wednesday, we were preparing to leave for our trip to Nauvoo, IL and the little chrysalis rested peacefully in the bug catcher. Our plan was to bring it with us because we were not going to take a chance on missing this unique event of nature. I was in the kitchen packing snacks when I unexpectedly saw a wing break through the cocoon.

Congratulations! What a fun thing to behold! Maybe he will come back and visit!
Wow! What an amazing process to watch...and so educational at the same time. :) I'll bet your kids always remember Jake.
Wow, that is amazing to have actually seen!! It's incredible what butterflies can do. Emma and I were just reading a book on that. Maybe we'll have to do something like this some time. I think you made the right decision to let it go...even if it was hard! That's so neat;-)
That's pretty cool, for sure. Cool photos!
That is so cool! And seriously, what are the odds that he would actually find a caterpillar that would turn into a monarch butterfly??! Way to go Wilson!
